You're preparing a custom motorcycle and you come across a technical question that often comes up: Keep the original hydraulics, or switch to a cable-operated master cylinder? What exactly is a brake master cylinder?

The master cylinder (or "brake pump") is the part that converts your effort on the lever into hydraulic pressureIn practical terms, when you squeeze the lever, a piston pushes brake fluid into a closed circuit. This fluid then extends the caliper pistons, which clamp the brake pads onto the disc. Without a functioning master cylinder, there are no brakes.

On a stock motorcycle, the master cylinder is integrated into the control unit on the right side of the handlebar (for the front brake) or on the right footpeg bracket (for the rear brake). The lever directly actuates the master cylinder piston. It's a direct hydraulic assembly.

How is a cable-operated master cylinder installed?

  1. Check the compatibility of the commands — You need to switch to KustomTech cable controls if you haven't already. Otherwise, the handlebar lever and cable won't connect.
  2. Choose the mounting position — Under the seat is the classic option. Behind the tank is the most visually clean option. Some even mount it inside the frame on extreme projects.
  3. Secure the MC — the 2 mounting holes of the plate allow a center distance of 33 to 38 mm, compatible with common custom plates.
  4. Connect the hydraulic hose to your caliper — use a braided stainless steel hose or reinforced rubber hose in good condition.
  5. Connect the cable from the lever towards the MC. Adjust the tension to have a correct lever free play (~5 mm of play).
  6. Purge The system with fresh brake fluid (typically DOT 4). The final test: lift the front wheel, gradually squeeze the lever — if the wheel locks firmly without the lever touching the handlebar, it's good.
