How to break in raw denim — the complete guide in 6 months

No freezer, no beach, no myths. Just an honest method to transform your selvedge denim into a one-of-a-kind piece, with the real creases, whiskers, and honeycombs that give raw denim its value when worn.

In Summary
Raw denim will break in 4 to 8 months depending on the frequency of wear and the weight of the fabric. Do not wash it for the first 30 daysWear it every day, wash it in cold water and inside out the first time, then every 2-3 months thereafter. No freezer (it's pointless), no tumble drying. Among the best entry-level choices: the Roamer 11oz Metal or, for the most demanding, the Chopper 15oz Indigo.

Why ruin a pair of raw denim jeans, instead of buying them pre-washed?

Raw denim is indigo-dyed jeans that have not undergone any other process. no post-weaving treatmentNo stone wash, no enzymes, no sandblasting. When you buy it, it's stiff, uniformly dark, almost cardboard-like. Over the weeks of wear, the indigo will settle in the areas where the fabric flexes: behind the knees, around the pockets, on the waistband, along the thighs.

These fade marks — which we call whiskers (hip creases) honeycombs (in a honeycomb pattern behind the knees) and stacks (the accordion effect at the ankles when the pants are too long) — are unique to your body shape and how you use them. They give the jeans a signature that no pre-washed jeans can ever replicate. That's the whole point of raw denim: to carry your own story on your legs.

"A well-worn pair of raw denim jeans is worth three times its price second-hand. A stone-washed pair is worth a third."

Getting off to a good start: choosing the right jeans

Not all raw denim breaks the same way. The weight of the fabric (in ounces per square yard) radically changes the speed and texture of the fade. Our complete guide to Pike Brothers trousers He details everything, but here's the essential information to break it:

Our recommendation For your first raw denim: start with 11oz or 13oz. You'll get great marks in less than six months without suffering from a month of stiff legs.

The month-by-month method

01

Month 1 — Continued babywearing

It is the most important phaseFor 30 days, do not wash the jeans. Do not put them in a plastic bag either. Wear them as much as possible — walking, riding your motorcycle, at the office. With each hour of wear, you set the creases a little more at your crease points: behind your knees, around your hips, at your groin. Indigo migrates towards areas of friction.

The freezer trapMany English-language blogs recommend putting jeans in the freezer to "kill bacteria." This is a myth: the cold doesn't kill anything (the bacteria are just dormant), and when they thaw, the moisture damages the fabric. Airing them out for 24 hours on the balcony does the same thing. No proven benefit.

02

Month 2 — The first wash

After 4 to 6 weeks of daily wear, your jeans will have integrated your creases. It's time to wash it for the first time. Here is the exact procedure:

  • Turn the jeans inside out (otherwise the pleats will lose their sharpness).
  • Machine program: 30°C maximum, short or delicate cycle.
  • Laundry detergent: neutral, without bleaching agents. Some raw denim fans use only cold water and a little white vinegar — that works too.
  • No aggressive spin cycle (speed ≤ 600 rpm).
  • Drying: flat, upside down, in the shadeNo tumble dryer, ever.

You'll lose about 1 cm in the waist and 1–2 cm in the length (most Pike Brothers jeans are sanforized, so shrinkage is minimal). Once dry, the jeans will regain their shape after a few hours of wear.

03

Months 3 to 4 — The first visible pleats

At this stage, you can already see the whiskers to the hips and the first honeycombs at the knees. The blue is starting to become mottled. Keep wearing jeansWash every 2 to 3 months (no more often), air overnight after each wear to limit bacteria.

If you wear jeans on a motorcycle, the creases quickly become more pronounced at the knees (a permanent crease area). This is exactly the desired effect.

04

Months 5 to 6 — The big visual leap

That's where jeans take their... definitive characterThe faded areas are pronounced; the indigo has settled everywhere except on the deep creases (which remain very dark). The contrast becomes clear between the navy blue of the unbleached areas and the pale blue of the hips/knees.

From this point on, maintenance is minimal: a cold wash every 3 months is sufficient. If you get a stain (grease, coffee), treat it with cold water and Marseille soap without washing the entire garment.

The 5 mistakes to avoid

  • Wash at 40°C or higher — heat makes the indigo disappear in 3 washes.
  • Tumble drier — deforms cotton, cooks indigo, accelerates wear and tear on seams.
  • fabric softener — clogs the fibers and prevents natural fading.
  • Washing too often — One wash per month is sufficient after the first 6 months.
  • Place in a plastic bag for storage — Let the cotton breathe, otherwise mold is guaranteed.

How long does a pair of Pike Brothers jeans last when they're badly broken in?

Raw denim that is properly cared for (washed every 2–3 months, dried flat) easily lasts 7 to 10 years for weekly wear. The triple-needle stitching of Pike Brothers jeans and their solid copper rivets will allow you to repair a tear (sashiko, contrast patch) rather than throwing the jeans away.

By comparison, a mainstream brand stonewashed jean lasts 18 to 24 months before tearing at the back pockets. Raw denim costs more to buy but much less over the year.

FAQ — Raw Denim Care

Is it really necessary to never wash your raw denim jeans at first?

The myth of "6 months without washing" comes from Japanese Selvedge fans, but it's extreme. 4 to 6 weeks is enough to fix the pleats. Beyond that point, the smell becomes unpleasant and the benefit is marginal.

Do jeans shrink a lot in the first wash?

If the jeans are sanforized (the majority of the Pike Brothers catalog, indicated on the product page), allow 1 cm for the waist and 1–2 cm for the length. If the jeans are unsanforized (rarer, like some special edition 1963 Roamer jeans), allow 3 to 5 cm for a reduction. Always read the product description before buying.

Can you soak your raw denim in salt water to speed up the breakage?

Salt water and the ocean are an old American technique. It works, but it's very aggressive It fades the fabric, and the color fades all over rather than just in areas of friction. You gain two months of fading at the price of a change in shade. Not recommended.

What belt should I wear with raw denim?

A thick, 4cm wide leather belt, made of vegetable-tanned leather that will develop a patina over time. The contrast between the patinated leather and the distressed denim is the visual signature of someone experienced with raw denim.

Will the red from the inner pockets (selvedge red line) bleed through?

No, it's a stable dye. However, indigo can transfer onto white fabric (light socks, cream-colored armchairs) for the first two months. Avoid wearing white socks during the first month.
