When you're a biker in Marseille, you have a privilege many envy: the Mediterranean on one side, the hills and mountains on the other, and in between, roads that wind through the calanques, the garrigue, and Provençal villages. At Holdfast, these roads are our daily playground. Here are our 5 favorite routes for an unforgettable motorcycle ride.
The Provençal road: sun, curves and freedom
1. The Route des Crêtes — Cassis to La Ciotat
This is THE Marseille classic. The Route des Crêtes The D141 between Cassis and La Ciotat offers breathtaking views of the cliffs of Cap Canaille — the highest sea cliffs in Europe. Fifteen kilometers of winding roads perched high above the Mediterranean, with photo opportunities at every turn.
Distance: approximately 45 km round trip from Marseille. Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes, nice and easy. Best moment: Sunrise on a weekday (no one on the road) or late afternoon when the light gilds the cliffs. Coffee break: the port of Cassis on a terrace.
2. The Calanques Massif — via the Gineste
La D559 (Route de la Gineste) It crosses the Calanques massif between Marseille and Cassis. It's a winding road through the garrigue with a series of technical bends on a decent surface. The scent of thyme and rosemary follows you around every curve. In the height of summer, the heat rises from the tarmac—bring water and [other accessories]. ventilated gloves.
Distance: 25 km from Marseille to Cassis. Duration: 45 min. Tip: Combine with the Route des Crêtes for a complete 70km loop.
3. The Col de l'Espigoulier — for lovers of winding roads
Less known to tourists, the Col de l'Espigoulier (D44A) is a local biker's secret. The climb from Aubagne features tight switchbacks through the forest, with spectacular views of the Sainte-Baume massif at the summit. The road surface is good, the bends are gradual—perfect for safe and enjoyable riding.
Distance: The loop is 60 km. Elevation: 728 metres. Please note: Possible gravel in shaded corners after rain. Break : the village of Gémenos for a well-deserved pastis.
4. The Côte Bleue — Provence with its feet in the water
Heading west from Marseille via the D5 along the Côte BleueEnsuez, Carry-le-Rouet, Sausset-les-Pins, La Couronne—a string of small fishing ports and coves where the water is turquoise even in October. The road is gentle, the curves sweeping, the pace relaxed. It's the perfect Sunday morning drive, with a sea urchin stop in winter and an ice cream break in summer.
Distance: 80 km loop (return via the motorway or via the Étang de Berre). Duration: 2-3 hours including stops. Bonus: the fish market in Carry on Sunday mornings.
5. Sainte-Victoire — in the footsteps of Cézanne
La ascent to the Bimont Dam via the D10 and then the Tholonet road offers a magnificent view of the Sainte-Victoire mountain — the one Cézanne painted 87 times. The light of Provence, the vineyards of Aix, the umbrella pines: it's the quintessential Provençal postcard. Ideal for a morning outing with a breakfast break in Aix-en-Provence on the way back.
Distance: The loop from Marseille is 90 km. Duration: 2h Don't miss: the view from the Bimont Dam car park, especially at sunrise.
