Why choosing the right boots makes all the difference

A biker boot is more than just a shoe. It's an element of safety, style, and durability . The shaft height protects the ankle in case of a fall, the closure system determines how easy they are to put on, and the leather and stitching determine whether the boot will last 3 years or 15. On a custom motorcycle, the boots are as visible as the jacket—often more so, because they're at eye level for a pedestrian who catches your eye on the sidewalk.

The four vintage families we'll be reviewing ( Engineer, Harness, Tanker, Mountaineer ) all originate from the American military or workwear of the 1930s-1960s. Each has its own specific style and use. Mixing the two is the first mistake a beginner can make.

1. Tanker Boots — the boot of the Café Racer

Originating with American tank crews in 1945 , the Tanker Boot is designed so that a soldier can put it on in under 30 seconds in case of an alert. It features three quick-release side buckles, a double pleat at the calf, and a Goodyear-welted leather sole. The 25 cm height provides good ankle protection without hindering gear shifting.

2. Engineer Boots — the greaser icon

Introduced in 1937 by Chippewa for American railroad construction workers, the Engineer Boot was massively adopted by bikers in the 50s: Marlon Brando in The Wild One , James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause . Laceless (and therefore quick to put on), with only two buckles, a height of 30 cm, and a round toe, it is the most iconic boot of the American biker.

Difference from the Tanker : the Engineer is taller, heavier (1.5 kg vs. 1.1 kg for the Tanker), with thicker leather (3.5 mm vs. 2.5 mm). It offers better protection in case of a fall but is more durable. It's a long-term investment.

3. Harness Boots — the Hells Angels spirit

The Harness Boot appeared in the 70s when Frye revived the fashion for thick leather. Recognizable by its metal ring on the elbow-toe (which has no utilitarian function — it is purely a distinctive feature), it became in the 80s the marker of hardcore American bikers: Hells Angels, Sons of Silence, etc.

It's less versatile than the Tanker or the Engineer: too biker-oriented to wear in the city without drawing attention, too heavy for extended walking. But visually, it's the most instantly recognizable boot of its kind.

It is not found at Pike Brothers (the brand favours the pre-1969 spirit), but a search in the Holdfast boots category may reveal limited edition seasonal releases.

4. Mountaineer Boots — for hiking and extreme cold

A reproduction of the 1946 US Army Alpine mountaineer boot , the Mountaineer Boot has a lower shaft (22 cm) but a metal hook lacing system that ensures perfect lateral support for extended walking. It features a thick Vibram lug sole, vegetable-tanned leather lining, and a reinforced heel counter.

This is the "all-season" boot in the catalog: it fits comfortably on a motorcycle without hindering movement (the low shaft doesn't interfere with the gear shift), it's comfortable for 8 hours of riding, and it provides excellent insulation against the cold thanks to the double leather. If you could only own one pair of vintage boots, the Mountaineer is the best compromise.

How to choose your shoe size (US/EU)

Pike Brothers shoes are sized in US sizes, generally half a size smaller than a European dress shoe (the thick leather will soften slightly after a month of wear). Always refer to the insole measurement (in centimeters), indicated on each product page, rather than your usual shoe size.

Tip: Wear thick wool socks when trying them on (Holdfast sells Pike Brothers socks designed for these boots). The boot should fit snugly without restricting circulation. If your heel moves more than 5 mm while walking, go down half a size.

Maintenance: 4 rules for a 10-year lifespan

• Brush after each use Use a soft bristle brush. Removes the dust that dries the leather.
• Wax once a month Use a neutral nourishing cream (avoid tinted products if the leather is to develop a natural patina). Apply sparingly and rub thoroughly.
• Slow drying If they have been rained on: wooden shoe trees, 1 meter away from a heat source (not in front of a radiator — the leather will crack).
• Resole Every 3 years or so, have your boots repaired by a cobbler who uses Goodyear welt construction. Expect to pay €80–120. This will make the boots last 15+ years.
