The history of the motorcycle leather jacket — 10 iconic models (1928–2025)
One hundred years, ten jackets, one obsession: protecting the motorcyclist while giving him a style that transcends eras. From the Schott Perfecto of 1928 to today's Hollister by Holdfast, here is the complete lineage.
The leather motorcycle jacket was born in 1928 at Schott with the Perfecto. Hollywood, World War II, Vietnam, and European biker culture subsequently shaped it. Holdfast follows in this tradition with its Hollister jacket, made in Europe from 1.4 mm thick buffalo leather, and the new 1932 Roadster Jacket Pike Brothers output in 2026.
Why the leather jacket has never been replaced
In the last hundred years, Cordura, Kevlar, D3O protectors, and Gore-Tex have been invented. But no material has ever dethroned thick full-grain leather for motorcycles. Why? Because nothing else combines these four essential properties:
- Abrasion resistance A 1.4 mm leather jacket can withstand 90 km/h of sliding on asphalt. A modern textile jacket rarely lasts more than 50 km/h.
- Ergonomics : the leather takes the shape of the body when worn, becoming a second skin.
- Longevity : 30 to 50 years for a well-tanned leather, versus 5–10 years for a technical textile.
- Visual identity : no textile has the patina of leather aged with its owner.
Here are the ten jackets that have written this story — each marking an era, a culture, a use.
1928 — Schott Perfecto, the original myth
Irving Schott, a Jewish tailor from New York who immigrated from Russia, designed the first motorcycle jacket with a zip for the Beck brand. He christened it "Perfecto" — after his favorite cigar. Asymmetrical, fold-down collar, inset belt, two slanted chest pockets. All the hallmarks of a motorcycle jacket were already there.
Sold at Harley-Davidson from 1929 for €5,50 (the equivalent of €95 today), it became in less than five years the unofficial uniform of American bikersIts asymmetrical cut allows the jacket to be closed in a leaning position over the tank — which is not possible with a centered closure.

1944 — A-2 Flight Jacket, the US Air Force jacket
During World War II, the US Air Force commissioned Schott and Werber leather A-2 jacketA brown goatskin jacket with a fur collar, elasticated sleeves, and a plain back. Not asymmetrical this time, but centered (it needs to be able to be opened quickly in the cabin). Lambswool lining for missions at 6000m altitude where temperatures reach -40°C.
Back in 1945, the pilots brought their A-2s back to civilian life. This was the first leather jacket. military to enter the men's wardrobe — fifteen years before the M-65 or the N-1 did the same. Pike Brothers recreates the spirit with its B-15 Flight Jacket Olive USAAF (variant of A-2 in the same family).
1953 — The Schott Perfecto 618 in The Wild Bunch
Marlon Brando wears a black Schott Perfecto 618 with a red collar in The wild one (Stanley Kramer, 1953). He plays Johnny Strabler, leader of the Black Rebels motorcycle gang. The film was banned in Great Britain for 14-year-olds due to incitement to violence. But the jacket itself instantly became a cult item.
In 1955, Schott sold 50,000 units of the 618 model—a tenfold increase over the previous year's production. The black Perfecto jacket was now associated with a type of person: the rebel. James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause(1955) confirms. The design is engraved.
1965 — Lewis Leathers Bronx, the English answer
On the other side of the Atlantic, lewis leathers (founded in London in 1892) released the Bronx model in 1962 and then revisited it in 1965. The Bronx is shorter than the Perfecto, more fitted, made of thick black leather with a locking belt and buckle. It's the jacket of the RockersThe English motorcyclists who raced on Triumphs and BSAs in the 60s, opposed to Mods from Brighton.
The Bronx — brought to life by the Beatles in their Hamburg beginnings (1961-1962), then by the Rolling Stones and later Sid Vicious — makes leather a British affair as much as an American oneIt is from this tradition that the Café Racer spirit descends.
1969 — Vanson Leathers and the AMA Racer
Lou Vanson founded Vanson Leathers in Boston in 1974, but he had already been manufacturing racing jackets for the AMA championship since 1969. Vanson invented the fitted jacket, without a belt, with stretch inserts under the armpitsThis is the birth of the modern sporty motorcycle jacket — the one you wear in racing, not in town.

1977 — The Schott 141 and Punk Culture
When Sid Vicious took to the stage in 1977 with a Schott 141 jacket studded all over, he changed the meaning of the motorcycle jacket for the third time. No longer the solitary rebel of the 50s (Brando), no longer the sporty rocker of the 60s (Beatles) — now it was the bearer of a violent social critiqueEnglish punk adopted it massively, followed by American hardcore.
The fashion for badges, patches, and emblems sewn directly onto leather also dates from this period. This tradition can still be found today on... cuts American MCs.
1991 — The Aero Highwayman jacket
Aero Leather Clothing (Galashiels, Scotland) released the Highwayman in 1991 — an exact replica of the Buco J-100 jacket worn by American bikers in the 50s. Horse leather (Front Quarter Horse Hide) tanned in the USA, satin lining, Talon zip. No modern compromises.
Aero revived the whole trend for the historically accurate motorcycle jacket—the kind that would inspire Holdfast and Pike Brothers ten years later. At €1200-1800, it's still a jacket for the discerning enthusiast.
2010 — Iron Heart and the 21oz selvedge leather
Iron Heart, a Japanese brand based in Yokohama, released its first jackets in 21oz denim and 1.7 mm thick leather in 2010. The latest addition to the line: the 1932 Roadster JacketReleased by Pike Brothers in early 2026, this jacket is a near-identical replica of the motorcycle jacket worn by American racers at Daytona Beach in 1932. Made from thick, aged, oiled leather, it features a lambswool lining, two vertical pockets, and a button-down collar. Available in two colors: Glendale Black and Glendale Brown.
